You may have new struggles that you are unfamiliar with, and your old struggles would be long gone. Time is on your side the longer you stay in business. But, as time goes by, you become more attune to your business and your market. Taking a risk is always hard, no matter what and when. Trying to figure out what sets you and your product apart in the very early stages is difficult. Sometimes finding yourself along the way can be the hardest thing. It definitely wasn’t and isn’t a smooth road. I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
And, the product had launched a new south Florida business into a growth spurt. It set the tone for a new kind of product. People really enjoyed the aesthetic aspect of this performance car part. For the next four years, I had taken the stylized BIG MOUTH snorkel engine air intake and ran with it, applying it to every car platform I could. A twist on a car part that was boring and had no real visual appeal. From there, the BIG MOUTH ram air intake snorkel was born. It is a stylized version of the 100-year-old car part that instantly became a hit in the market. It is not a run-of-the-mill intake snorkel for your car (those are a dime a dozen). My flagship product was soon to be born and recognized throughout the world. Until I saw a need for a product, something that people wanted, but they didn’t know they wanted. I was 3D printing small things but nothing really groundbreaking that is, nothing highly profitable. For the first year, I was really struggling to survive. 3D printing and turning a profit big enough to scale up is even harder. 3D printing in a manner to sustain yourself is hard enough as it is. I thought to myself, “this is great! I can make anything I want and just sell it!”.
I had fixed it and started 3D printing small parts and selling them on car forums for a few bucks each. Luckily at the time I was tinkering around with 3D printing and had a 3D printer given to me by someone because it wasn’t working. Every dollar I made, I re-invested into my business.Īt first, the business was an engineering consulting firm, I tried that. I had very little disposable income and was working part-time to make ends meet. It took me another eight years before I finally jumped ship and started my own business in a tiny 60 sq-ft bedroom. I knew right away that the structure of 9-5 was just not for me. Although the prospects were good, and there was a future doing what I was doing, I didn’t feel that I wanted to stay in the 9-5 forever.
